You may not know the name of French director Francis Veber, and his humorous French comedy “The Dinner Game” (1999), but if you are fond of comedy, you might have seen the films like “Father’s Day” and “Birdcage.” Yes, the last two Hollywood outings are actually remakes of his works, and though not all of his films are masterpieces, “The Closet” alone would earn you remember his name. This film is that comical.

Daniel Auteuil is M. Pignon, who has been working for a condom factory as an accountant for 20 years, now he happens to learn that he is going to be fired. Scared by the news, he thinks of jumping from the window to extinguish himself when an passe man living in the next room gives a tip; “pretend you’re ecstatic.” For political reasons (and commercial ones too) the company cannot fire him as they are shrinking of being accused of having discriminating attitudes. It succeeds, and M. Pignon is jubilant … for a while.

Because unexpected things happen like chain reaction; “sexual harrassment” from his exquisite female boss (she has her bear reason), sexual approach from his co-worker and rugby coach (he has his gain reason, too), and so on. The chronicle goes on with twists and turns, finally leading to the confidence newly established in M. Pignon.

Though the ending is not as wonderful as it should be, and some parts are a bit astounding, the cast is so ample that those flaws are all ignored in the demolish. Daniel Auteuil’s dead-pan humor is always effective, and funniest is his face when he is in a parade wearing a grand tip of condom on his head. Also comical is Gerard Depardieu, whose character experiences a total transformation.

“The Closet” has some satire on our attitude about sexuality, but it doesn’t preach them. Rather, the film handles them with a lighter tough, which avoids the pitfall of being too sunless or philosophical. The fact is, the film is too light for some; and clearly the director hesitates to push some fascinating points the film presents. But “The Closet” should be about M. Pignon, who, fair like the protagonist of the same name in “The Dinner Game,” is about Mr. Everyman. His inch to a current life is what we eye, and we be pleased watching. As such the film succeeds, and it is because of amazing Daniel Auteuil.

Francis Veber, the King of French Farce, keeps cranking ‘em out at a rate that would boggle even the mind of Georges Feydeau. His latest, “The Closet,” features nebbishy accountant Francois–mocked by his colleagues, abandoned by his wife, dissed by his son and about to be fired–who schemes to sustain his job by pretending to be elated. Francois’ contented psychologist neighbor advises him not to change anything about himself–what will change is other people’s perception of him. That’s not the only thing that changes in Veber’s smoothly written, surefire-as-clockwork farce. Francois’ life ends up changing in unforeseen ways, as do the lives of the people around him–particularly that of Santini, the homophobic personnel manager who must suddenly play up to Francois in order to sustain his fill job. All sorts of crazy complications ensue, and the denouement is appropriately sunny. “The Closet” won’t change your life, but it will leave you feeling tickled, and you will marvel at the sheer star power lavished on this lightweight memoir. Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu, France’s respond to Kevin Spacey and Robert De Niro, play Francois and Santini; in the supporting cast are Thierry Lhermitte, Michel Aumont and Jean Rochefort, which is roughly equivalent to having Richard Gere, Gene Hackman and Michael Caine in the supporting cast of an English-language movie. These expedient professionals know exactly what is required of them, and bellow it gift-wrapped. As crazed as the comedy gets, it is the mild individual moments that will really leave you rolling in the aisles: whether it’s Auteuil’s sick embarrassment at sitting on a Elated Pride float wearing a condom hat, or Depardieu’s blissed-out, zombie scrutinize as his world crumbles around him, you know that you are in the hands of master farceurs.

“Miniature Bear: Halloween Stories” is the only “Microscopic Fill” DVD release for 2006. Although it’s not immediately evident, this DVD is actually unbiased a rerelease with additional stories of whisper already released on VHS. The main four featured stories that are piece of the Halloween theme were all released on the VHS “Itsy-bitsy Goblin Enjoy” (which I bear) method benefit in 1999.

That said, this is collected a grand note. There’s actually lot of state on this DVD — around 75 minutes worth. In a bright fade, each individual record is accessible from the main menu and the tubby opening and closing plays for each fable — so you / your kids have the choice of whether to study it or fast-forward through it. Unfortunately, other than promos for other Gash Jr. releases, there are no special features.

Besides the Halloween-themed stories (which are “Goblin Night,” “Moonlight Serenade,” “How to Dread Ghosts” and “Utter Monster”), there are also eight other stories. I’m glowing distinct most of these have been released before, but there may be one or two that haven’t previously been seen on home video. “Exploring” is a very early and nice “Runt Believe” chronicle in which Limited Have heads up an expedition. Two other particularly noteworth ones are “The Campfire Account” (in which Little’s Bear’s Uncle Rusty tells a account) and “Duck Loses Her Quack” (in which Duck tries to lisp ducklings quacking.) The other stories are “Under the Covers,” “Night of the Bulky Moon,” “Up All Night,” “Slight Sherlock Fill” and “Detective Cramped Beget.”

One bit of warning — the stories on this are so wonderfully relaxing that you or your kids might ruin up falling asleep! Not because it’s dull — it’s anything but, but honest because the overall tone, coloring and characters are very noble and relaxing. The only other exhibit like this that I assume offers actual competition in this category is “Maisy.”

Oh, and I didn’t see any changes in the theme music.

I treasure Itsy-bitsy Have for my 3 year used. It DOES detached down tiny boys. But I was disappointed that they changed the theme music. Don’t “they” realize that children need routine – my itsy-bitsy boy jumps for joy when he hears the conventional theme music. We effect this on today all enraged to discover the Halloween episodes and he was quite upset the music was different – en fin….it is collected Exiguous Absorb but fair a cramped different.

Although he is never mentioned by name, the ghost of John Lennon haunts writer-director-producer Rebecca Cook’s Shooting Livien, a relentlessly bleak tale about the rise (sort of) and fall of a New York rock musician. Portrayed by Jason Behr (known principally for his work on TV shows like Dawson’s Creek and Roswell), John Livien is a New York singer-songwriter on the threshold of the big time. His ducks all seem to be in a row: his bandmates (including Dominic Monaghan, The Lord of the Rings‘ Merry) and manager (Ally Sheedy) are ready to rock; record companies are interested; he’s got an adoring, attractive girlfriend (Sarah Wynter of The Dead Zone and 24); and folks seem to love his tunes, which evoke “Come Together” and other Lennon classics (Livien also bears a passing resemblance to Lennon, along with a bogus Brit accent that surfaces whenever he wants to sound insouciant and/or sardonic, just like the former Beatle). Livien also has a drug jones, not to mention big time Mom and Dad issus that follow him around like a rabid mongrel and result in hallucinations, suicidal tendencies, and other bad stuff. But his (and, in the end, our) biggest problem is that Livien is a pretentious, miserable, solipsistic loser who goes out of his way to thoroughly alienate everyone around him. As we now know, John Lennon was a fairly prickly character himself. But he was also a driven, preternaturally gifted artist whose work had a profound influnce on the world. As depicted in this film, John Livien (Livien Lennon clever, eh?) is merely a passably talented wanker who’s nearly impossible to like or care about. Director Cook shows some genuine promise, but Shooting Livien is a bummer. –Sam Graham
